. the following month the united states announced that u.s. drone strike had killed a libyan who was the second ranking guy in al qaeda central. a guy who went by the moniker al libi which means the libyan. the same group in benghazi responded immediately within 24 hours. they launched another attack that they filmed al qaeda-style, and they ultimately claimed credit for it. this time their target was the u.s. consulate in benghazi, the same u.s. consulate where christopher stevens was killed two nights ago. they hit the consulate with an ied, turned the attack into an al qaeda-style video type of propaganda. the same group hit a british envoy in benghazi with a car bomb. it had the hallmarks of al qaeda inspiration or al qaeda training. they filmed the incident, dropped leaflets. they tried to take as much credit as possible. then on the morning of september 11th, this week, al qaeda central put out a video calling for attacks to avenge that same killing of al libi the group in benghazi had avenged before when it was first announced he was killed. by that night, the night of september 11th thi

mohammed as blas fa mouse. we don't know if this person is base ed based in the united states and that's to whom the video is attributed as why the attacks were made on american properties abroad. we don't know if there were more complex reasons. this is not the first time that perceived criticism of islam has been reacted to violently in the muslim world. a florida pastor promoted what he was calling "burn a koran day." that spurred days of protests in afghanistan killing nine people there. in 2005 it was cartoons depict depicting the prophet mohammed. and u.s. service members accidentally burned copies of the koran in order to dispose of them. it sparked riots throughout afghanistan killing 30 people overall. but again, breaking news at this hour. a day of violent protests in libya and egypt. the american consulate and the american embassy in egypt. and reports still unconfirmed at this time that one american may have been killed at that consulate attack. this is an evolving story. we're still trying to get confirmation, but we'll update you as we learn more. that's tonight's breakin

no longer function in what the united states has become. >> that issue about the legitimacy of the president and trying to other rise him, i found myself in reading the right-wing arguments, it's not just stuff from the blog world. it's definitely relatively respected republican pollsters starting to get on board. it made me start to think about let's say the election goes the way the polls say it's going to go. aren't they laying the groundwork to say he stole the lek? that his election is illegitima illegitimate? whether or not you think he's foreign, he couldn't possibly be a legitimate president for a second term. >> they are never going to acknowledge he's legitimately president. he can serve the full eight years. they are not going to acknowledge he was legitimate. but the question becomes, can it remain viable as a party? and the real problem that the republicans have, i mean the polls come after the fact. the polls are a reflection of what's going on in the united states. the real problem that the republicans have in this campaign is, they have a terrible candidate. mitt romney is no

of what's going on in the united states. the real problem that the republicans have in this campaign is, they have a terrible candidate. mitt romneis not a good id but potentially even bigger problem is that the electorate does not seem to be buying what the republicans are offering. when romney picked ryan as vice president, i said to my wife, i think romney may have lost the election here. threas i saithas bee picking paul ryan, it opened up that argument of the republican party as extreme and the democrats just pounced on that as you would expect them to do. d the country does not want those extreme aspects of the republican party, those extreme right wing policies. theyo ree 'st us into this trouble both overseas with the war in iraq and also with the economy. and they are not going for it anymore. the republic no longer belies that the way to help middle cls and low-income families is to give more money to the rich. ulvo tidught tt tt rney he decided not to do that. >> i feel like the country republicans people in the middle and on the left want a republican party that's essential

mitt romney unwittingly declared himself unqualified to be president of the united states. this is nuts. if he simply filed normally, taking the deductions he was legally able to take, he would have paid a lower tax rate than what he paid. since that was a political problem purely for show he deliberately overpaid the irs in order to inflate his tax rate on purpose. he explained that's why he was doing it. on the maddow blog today it was said mr. romney was in the extraordinary position of select ing his own tax rate and then working backwards from there. this is a mess for the romney campaign. in these new tax returns we learn mr. romney made $13 million in total income last year. aside from the gee whiz factor of his making $13 million a year, even though he hasn't had an actual paying job since 1999, aside from that there is also the fact that even other average millionaires in this country pay way more in taxes than mitt romney pays. your average tax rate for your run of the mill millionaire now is 25%. that's what the average millionaire in america ends up paying in taxes after all

of english as the official language of the united states. they called for the arizona papers please laws to be emulated across the country, and then the author of the arizona papers please law left the gop platform committee in order to go sue the obama administration to try to stop the mini version of the dream act the president brought about by executive order because of course republicans in congress remain totally hostile to it now even though long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away, it was a republican act in the first place. they are the biggest growing block of voters. latino voters are the reason democrats think texas is going to be a swing state as early as 2016. and to the extent that republicans want to woo those voters now in 2012, they're not trying to do it on policy. they're trying to do it on identity politics alone. it is a big gamble for them, actually, as a party. so far it's paying off in very, very, very tiny poll numbers. democrats get their chance to try to claw those numbers back this upcoming week. joining us now is victoria soto, a contributor to nbc latino. th

if you want to see barack obama re-elected president of the united states, do whatever you can for virgil goode. they challenged his spot on the ballot and they said put him on the ballot anyway, and he's going to be on the ballot unless virginia's attorney general, this guy, decides to kick virgil goode off the ballot. he's been campaigning for mitt romney including last week at the republican convention. under virginia law, he gets to decide whether virgil goode gets his name on the ballot or not. look at the headline, he promises he will be absolutely objective about this whole thing. absolutely. virginia is getting three different mitt romney ads this week. virginia, ohio, new hampshire, iowa, colorado, nevada, north carolina, florida. that's it, that's the election. who the country is counting on to handle this election about the presidency for the rest of us, eight states. when stuff gets weird in one of those eight states, when something like virgil goode happens in one of those eight states, while that might be a weird side bar virginia story at any other time in any other politic

? that makes sense. one of the least controversial things you could possibly imagine the united states government agreeing to. well, a bill to adjust that payment for the cost of living was brought to the senate floor last thursday. it was expected to go ahead. no plmuss, no fuss, who's goingo argue with that? it was blocked by someone in governor romney's party. an unnamed republican senator has put a hold on the cost of living adjustment to the surviving spouses and children's payment for soldiers killed in the war. the same hold is also affecting the disability payments to soldiers who are wounded in the war. some republican senator is blocking this. we don't know who. governor romney, here's a place to start. you are now the leader of the republican party. i realize you're having a hard time getting the training wheels off when it comes to national security, but here's an easy one. should that senator from your own party lift that hold on the cost of living adjustment to the payments to those people who we sort of owe it to? should a republican senator who's holding this up keep th
